Spain is a constitutional monarchy located in Southwestern Europe, comprising 85% of the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered by France and Andorra to the north east and Portugal to the west; it lies on the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the east, whilst to the south it is separated from North Africa by the Strait of Gibraltar. It is a member of the EU and NATO and is divided administratively into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities, with subdivisions of 50 provinces.
Spain covers a total area of 505,992 km² and is characterised by three main geographical areas: the mountainous north, with the Pyrenees on the French border and the Cordillera Cantábrica which runs down the coast; the Meseta Central plateau, occupying a semi-arid region surrounded by the peaks of the Sistema Ibérico (to the east) and the Sierra Morena (to the south), also the region in which the capital, Madrid, is located; and further mountain ranges in the south, such as the Sierra Nevada. Low-lying plains are found in coastal areas.
The population lives mainly in urban centres and numbers 46,704,314, with various ethnic groups and languages and a minority of foreign immigrants.
The official language is Spanish, though Basque, Catalan and Galician are all officially recognised regional idioms.
The country’s economy was one of the world’s most dynamic, up until 2008; it is based mainly on tertiary sector activities, with an advanced tourist industry, as well as livestock farming (especially sheep) and the production and export of grain, fruit, vegetables and olives. The local currency is the Euro.
